Tall fescue

(Festuca arundinacea L.)

With its big and deep root network, tall fescue is one of the most drought and heat tolerant grasses, and it produces feed in periods when other grasses have stopped growing. Tall fescue is very healthy, and the leaves are quite coarse. There are major differences in the varieties' ability to tolerate frost. Tall fescue is used especially for cutting and grazing in southern Europe, and in equivalent hot dry conditions, but we also have some very winterhardy varieties.

Breeding is focused on:

  • Combining good taste and soft leaves with high tolerance to drought
  • Resistance to leaf diseases (rust, xanthomonas, helminthosporium)
  • High production in the summer and fall
