Quick Facts

LONGFELLOW II is the newest and best of the improved chewings fescues in North America. It has a deep dark green color that exhibits aggressive fine textured shoots and a unique, compact winter dormant growth habit. Longfellow II has a reduced rate of vertical growth that results in less mowing. It has good shade tolerance and is adapted to low fertility and moderately high soil pH conditions. Longfellow II was entered in the 1998 Fine Fescue NTEP Test along with 78 fine fescue and 23 chewing fescue varieties. Data from the 2000 NTEP Fine Fescue Program Report conducted across 28 locations in the US and Canada indicates that Longfellow II tied for 1st in turf quality among chewing fescue varieties. It is best utilized in polyspecie turfgrass mixtures and for winter overseeding.
